Trump Proposes $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget Amid Iran War

Trump

Donald Trump is seeking a $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal 2027, marking a roughly 40% increase from 2026 levels.

The proposal allocates $1.1 trillion to the Department of Defense, with an additional $350 billion to be pursued through Congress for priorities including munitions production, industrial expansion, and a planned “Golden Dome” missile defense system.

The request, prepared by budget chief Russell Vought, comes as the U.S. enters the fifth week of its war with Iran, signaling long-term military investment despite expectations of a near-term end to the conflict.

Trump had earlier described the proposed spending as necessary to build a “Dream Military,” framing it as critical for national security.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the budget would serve as a global signal of U.S. strength.

Beyond defense, the plan includes a 13% increase in funding for the Department of Justice to support tougher crime policies.

At the same time, the budget proposes a 10% cut—about $73 billion—to nondefense programs, targeting areas such as housing, healthcare, environmental initiatives and community services, with some responsibilities shifted to state and local governments.

The proposal also sets aside $10 billion for a new “Presidential Capital Stewardship Program” under the National Park Service to upgrade infrastructure and historic sites in Washington, D.C.

Additional funding includes a $481 million increase for the Federal Aviation Administration to strengthen aviation safety, alongside plans to redirect funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act toward energy production, critical minerals, and nuclear security.
