Suella Braverman Defects to Reform UK, Becoming Third Tory MP to Switch This Month

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman has defected from the Conservative Party to Reform UK, becoming the latest sitting Tory MP to cross the floor.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced the move at a rally for party activists in central London. Braverman told supporters she had ended her 30-year Conservative Party membership, saying, “I feel like I’ve come home.”

Her defection makes her the third Conservative MP to join Reform UK this month, following Robert Jenrick and Andrew Rosindell, and the fourth since the 2024 general election. Reform now has eight sitting MPs.

Braverman has been an MP since 2015. She served as attorney general under Boris Johnson and was appointed home secretary by Liz Truss in September 2022. She resigned a month later after it emerged she had sent an official document using her personal email account, but was reappointed to the role by Rishi Sunak just six days later.Braverman joined Nigel Farage on stage, who two years ago described her as ‘absolutely pathetic’ on immigration (PA)

She became a prominent figure on the party’s right before being sacked the following year after publishing an article accusing the Metropolitan Police of bias in its handling of pro-Palestinian protests in London.

Addressing Reform supporters, Braverman said Britain was “broken,” citing uncontrolled immigration, struggling public services, public safety concerns and what she described as national weakness on the world stage. She said the country faced a choice between continued decline or taking steps to “fix our country, reclaim our power, and rediscover our strength.”
