Benny Sagi, president of the Beersheba District Court and a senior judge linked to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption proceedings, died in a traffic crash on Route 6 in southern Israel.

Police said a vehicle traveling off-road suddenly entered the highway and struck Sagi’s motorcycle near Kibbutz Kfar Menachem. Emergency responders said he showed no signs of life at the scene. Investigators described the incident as highly unusual and have launched a full inquiry into whether negligence, mechanical failure, or other factors were involved.
Sagi, who became acting court president in June 2024 and assumed the role permanently last April, was regarded as one of Israel’s most respected jurists. His death sent shockwaves through the legal and political system.
President Isaac Herzog said he was “shocked and pained,” praising Sagi’s integrity. Supreme Court President Isaac Amit said the judiciary was “dismayed,” calling him a compassionate and widely respected colleague. Justice Minister Yariv Levin described him as an exceptional judge.
The Judicial Authority said it was deeply saddened by his sudden death, calling Sagi a talented and well-liked leader.
He is survived by his wife and three children. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
