The virtual US Embassy for Iran has warned American citizens to leave the country immediately as nationwide unrest continues to intensify.
In a security alert, the embassy told US nationals to depart Iran without delay and not to expect assistance from the US government. Those unable to leave were instructed to find secure shelter inside their homes or in other safe buildings.
The advisory warned of continued internet disruptions and urged Americans to plan alternative ways to communicate. It also said that, if safe, people should consider leaving Iran by land through Armenia or Türkiye.
US Iranian dual nationals were told they must exit Iran using Iranian passports, as Tehran does not recognise dual citizenship. The embassy warned that showing a US passport or any links to the United States could be enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone.
The warning comes as President Donald Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on any country doing business with Iran, stepping up pressure on Tehran as protests grow. Trump has threatened military action if lethal force is used against demonstrators, while also leaving open the possibility of diplomacy.
US media reported that Trump has been briefed on a wide range of options beyond airstrikes, including cyber operations and psychological campaigns to disrupt Iran’s military command, communications and state media. His national security team is expected to discuss updated options at the White House.
Trump said his administration is monitoring the situation closely and is considering strong responses as the reported death toll continues to rise. Rights group HRANA said more than 500 people have been killed and over 10,000 arrested, noting that Iran’s internet blackout has made independent verification difficult.
