UK will not back blockade of Strait of Hormuz, PM Starmer says

Keir Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the UK will not be drawn into the Iran conflict or support any blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, despite mounting pressure.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Starmer emphasized that the government’s priority is ensuring the Strait is fully reopened. He confirmed that British naval assets, including minesweepers, are deployed in the region, focused on maintaining safe passage rather than engaging in combat operations.

Starmer made clear that the UK would only consider military involvement if there were a clear legal justification and a defined strategic plan. He reiterated that his position remains firm regardless of external pressure.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command announced the start of a naval blockade targeting all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports. The enforcement applies to ships of all nations, though transit through the Strait to non-Iranian destinations will remain unaffected.

U.S. President Donald Trump added that American forces would intercept vessels in international waters that had paid tolls to Iran, warning of severe consequences for any hostile actions against U.S. or civilian ships.
