The United States Mission Nigeria has issued a renewed warning over visa fraud, cautioning that violations could result in tighter scrutiny for Nigerian applicants.
In a statement shared on X, the mission said attempts to manipulate the visa process undermine the system and create additional screening burdens for others.
“Those who attempt fraud create added scrutiny for all applicants. We safeguard the U.S. visa system through rigorous screening, and our officers treat fraud with utmost seriousness,” the mission stated.
Applicants were urged to report suspected visa-related fraud through official channels. The mission also noted that many Nigerians continue to travel lawfully to the United States as students, professionals, temporary workers, entrepreneurs and investors.
Earlier this month, the mission highlighted repeated visa overstays by a minority of Nigerian travellers as a significant factor affecting future applications. It emphasized that stronger compliance with visa conditions would help preserve access for legitimate travellers.
Concerns about fraudulent applications have previously led to policy adjustments, including shorter visa validity periods and enhanced background checks, as the United States Department of State seeks to maintain the integrity of the immigration system.
