Nick Reiner Deemed Medically Unfit to Appear in Court on Double Murder Charges

Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, will not appear in court on December 16 after being deemed medically unfit, according to his attorney.

The 32-year-old is charged with the murder of his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 68, who were found dead with slashed throats at their Brentwood, California home on Sunday, December 14. Nick was arrested hours later.

His lawyer, Alan Jackson, told reporters that Reiner has not been medically cleared to be transported from jail to court. The reason has not been officially disclosed, but it could indicate he is on suicide watch or unable or unwilling to appear remotely.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s records initially showed Reiner was being held on $4 million bail, but that bail has since been revoked. Authorities have not explained the decision.

Nick Reiner, the couple’s middle child, has a long history of drug addiction and periods of homelessness, cycling through rehabilitation facilities for much of his adult life. He has two siblings, Jake and Romy. Rob Reiner also adopted Tracy Reiner, the daughter of his first wife, Penny Marshall.

If convicted on double homicide charges, Nick Reiner faces the possibility of life in prison.

Rob Reiner was a major figure in American film and television, first gaining fame as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family, a role that earned him two Emmy Awards. He later became one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, with films including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, A Few Good Men and The American President.

In 2015, Reiner directed Being Charlie, a semi-autobiographical drama co-written by Nick Reiner during his time in rehab. The film explored addiction, family conflict and resentment, drawing directly from their personal experiences.

The case remains under investigation as court proceedings are delayed pending Nick Reiner’s medical status.
