The months-long search for nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard has ended in tragedy, with authorities confirming that her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, acted alone in killing her.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that Melodee was shot in the head during a premeditated killing. Her remains were discovered in Utah earlier this month, roughly two months after she vanished during what investigators described as a sudden and suspicious mother-daughter road trip.
Sheriff-Coroner Bill Brown said the killing was “premeditated, ruthless, calculated and heartless,” noting that maternal filicide is rare and deeply disturbing. Investigators believe Melodee was murdered shortly after she and her mother were last seen on surveillance footage near the Colorado–Utah border on October 9.
Ashlee Buzzard was arrested on Tuesday and booked on a charge of first-degree murder. She is being held without bail.
Authorities confirmed the child’s identity through DNA testing. Investigators traced the pair’s movements across multiple states, including California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming and Nebraska. Surveillance footage from a car rental agency showed the mother and daughter wearing wigs, while detectives say the rental car’s license plate was temporarily swapped for a New York plate. Ashlee also allegedly backed into gas stations to avoid camera detection.
Searches of Buzzard’s home, a storage unit and the rental vehicle uncovered ammunition, including an expended cartridge case. Ballistic analysis linked evidence found in Utah to ammunition recovered from her residence.
The case initially drew attention after school officials reported Melodee missing following a prolonged absence. Authorities say Ashlee has not cooperated with investigators, and a clear motive has yet to be established.
“While these developments are an important step toward accountability,” Sheriff Brown said, “they do not lessen the profound loss of a young life.”
