A woman was shot and killed in Minneapolis on Wednesday during a major Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation. Officials in the Trump administration confirmed the incident, saying the woman was a rioter who tried to run over ICE officers with her vehicle.
According to DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, ICE officers in Minneapolis were carrying out “targeted operations” when rioters began blocking them. McLaughlin said one rioter used her vehicle as a weapon and attempted to run over law enforcement officers in what she described as an act of domestic terrorism. An ICE officer then fired what officials called defensive shots, killing the woman. Officers who were injured are expected to recover, according to the statement.
Federal authorities deployed hundreds of agents to Minneapolis as part of what officials described as the largest immigration crackdown since the exposure of a welfare fraud scheme involving some Somali residents of Minnesota.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he was aware of the shooting and called for ICE to leave the city immediately, arguing that the presence of federal immigration officers was creating chaos. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said his office was working to gather information about the shooting.
Officials have not released the woman’s name. Reports stated she was a US citizen, not an immigrant. The administration labeled her alleged attempt to drive into ICE personnel as domestic terrorism.
