Zootopia 2 Reclaims Box Office No. 1 Spot, Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide

“Zootopia 2” returned to the top of the domestic box office, earning $26.3 million in its third weekend, according to studio estimates, and officially crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, becoming the year’s second Hollywood film to do so.

With no major new releases and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” only arriving late Friday, the weekend was dominated by holdovers. “Zootopia 2” edged out “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” pushing its global total to $1.14 billion. A major driver of that success has been China, where the animated sequel has grossed $502.4 million, making it the biggest Hollywood release in the country in years.

The only other Hollywood film to surpass $1 billion worldwide in 2025 is Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” with $1.04 billion. The year’s highest-grossing movie overall remains China’s “Ne Zha 2,” which has earned nearly $2 billion domestically.

In its second weekend, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” brought in $15.4 million, a sharp 70% drop from its opening. Despite the decline, the sequel has reached $95.5 million domestically, a strong result for its $36 million budget and another franchise success for Blumhouse.

The weekend’s notable new release, James L. Brooks’s “Ella McCay,” struggled at the box office. The political comedy-drama earned just $2.1 million from 2,500 theaters. Poor reviews and limited audience interest weighed heavily on the $35 million production, Brooks’s first directed film in 15 years.

Overall box office revenue for the year is tracking close to last year’s totals, according to Comscore. Studios are now looking to the holiday period to boost attendance, with upcoming releases including “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,” “Marty Supreme,” “Anaconda,” and “Song Sung Blue.”
