Amazon Confirms Drone Strikes on UAE Data Centres Amid Regional Escalation

Amazon confirmed that two of its data centres in the United Arab Emirates were directly struck by drones on 2 February, disrupting cloud services across parts of the Middle East.

The company also reported damage to a facility in Bahrain after a nearby drone strike.

According to Amazon’s service dashboard, the incidents caused structural damage, power interruptions and activation of fire suppression systems, leading in some cases to internal water damage.

The strikes occurred amid escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran, following coordinated attacks on Iran that reportedly killed the country’s supreme leader and senior officials.

Amazon stated that it is working with local authorities and prioritising employee safety. No injuries were confirmed.

Its cloud division, Amazon Web Services, provides infrastructure for applications, websites and artificial intelligence systems globally, competing with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

Customers in affected regions were advised to back up critical data and shift workloads to alternative global servers to reduce disruption.

A day earlier, Amazon had reported that one UAE site was struck by unspecified objects and warned of potential operational instability.
