UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for EU Travellers

Starting April 2, 2025, EU nationals traveling to the UK for tourism or transit will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departure. This requirement, previously only for non-EU nationals, now applies to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens, including those merely passing through the UK.

However, there are exceptions. British and Irish citizens, those with a UK visa or permission to stay, holders of British Overseas Territories citizen passports, and those residing in Ireland and traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man are exempt from the ETA requirement.

The UK government introduced the ETA to enhance border security and streamline the entry process for travelers. EU nationals can begin applying for an ETA from March 5, 2025.

It’s crucial for EU nationals with Pre-Settled or Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) to ensure their eVisa is linked to their valid passport before travel. Failure to do so may result in boarding denial.\

This policy change is significant for EU nationals, who previously entered the UK with just a passport. Consequently, airlines and travel businesses will need to adjust their operations, and travelers should plan accordingly to avoid any disruptions.

While the transition may cause initial confusion, the system is anticipated to enhance immigration processes by enabling better tracking of travelers before their arrival in the UK.

How To Apply For UK ETA

Applying for a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a straightforward process. Most travelers can conveniently apply through the UK government’s mobile app. Decisions are usually issued within three days via email.

To apply, you’ll need a valid passport, an email address, and a debit or credit card to pay the fee of £10 (which will increase to £16 later in 2025). While you don’t need to provide your travel details, you’ll be required to answer a set of suitability questions.

Once approved, your ETA is digitally linked to your passport and is valid for two years. This means you won’t need to present additional documents at the UK border. However, if you obtain a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETA.

It’s important to note that an ETA can be refused for certain reasons, such as criminal records, past immigration breaches, or unpaid NHS debts. In such cases, a standard UK visa may be required instead.
