The United States has updated its global travel advisories, placing 23 countries under its highest warning level and urging American citizens not to travel to those destinations because of serious security, health or conflict-related risks.
In an update shared through the U.S. Department of State’s official TravelGov account, the department said its Level 4 advisory is reserved for destinations where conditions are considered extremely dangerous or where the U.S. government’s ability to provide emergency assistance to its citizens is significantly limited. The department said a Level 4 advisory means Americans should not travel to the affected countries “for any reason.” (Travel State)
The countries currently listed under the highest advisory level are:
- Afghanistan
- Belarus
- Burkina Faso
- Myanmar (Burma)
- Central African Republic
- Chad
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Haiti
- Iran
- Iraq
- Lebanon
- Libya
- Mali
- Niger
- North Korea
- Russia
- Somalia
- South Sudan
- Sudan
- Syria
- Uganda
- Ukraine
- Yemen (Adoption State)
Among the affected nations are 11 African countries: Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda. Uganda was recently elevated to Level 4 because of a combination of crime, terrorism, civil unrest and health concerns linked to the Ebola outbreak. (Travel State)
The latest advisory follows an earlier decision to keep Nigeria at Level 3 – Reconsider Travel. The State Department continues to advise Americans to reconsider travel to Nigeria because of crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest and inconsistent healthcare services, while warning against travel to several high-risk regions of the country.
Those areas include Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and northern Adamawa in northern Nigeria, as well as Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo and Rivers State—excluding Port Harcourt—in the country’s south.
Nigerian officials have previously rejected the U.S. assessment, arguing that the advisory reflects Washington’s internal risk evaluation procedures rather than the overall security situation across the country.
The State Department reviews its travel advisories regularly and encourages U.S. citizens to check the latest guidance before making international travel plans, particularly for destinations affected by armed conflict, political instability, disease outbreaks or other significant safety concerns.
