Former President Donald Trump has announced that he is “recommending” a 50% tariff on goods imported from the European Union into the United States.
“Our discussions with them are going nowhere!” he stated in a social media post on Friday, signaling a significant escalation in trade tensions with the EU. Currently, a 10% tariff applies to EU goods entering the U.S.
Trump also issued a warning to Apple, threatening a 25% import tax on iPhones not made in the United States.
“I informed Tim Cook a long time ago that iPhones sold in the U.S. should be manufactured here—not in India or anywhere else,” he said. “If that doesn’t happen, Apple must pay a tariff of at least 25% to the U.S.”
Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly used tariffs as a tool to pressure trading partners, aiming to boost American manufacturing and protect domestic jobs from foreign competition.
