Simon Cowell will temporarily step away from America’s Got Talent while undergoing another operation on his back.
The 66-year-old television producer and judge is expected to miss several weeks of the programme while he undergoes what his representative has described as routine back surgery. He is expected to return after recovering.
Cowell’s latest procedure is connected to continuing problems stemming from his serious electric-bike accident in August 2020. He broke his back in the accident and required major surgery, reportedly lasting about six hours, involving metal rods and screws. Cowell later revealed that the injury came close to damaging his spinal cord and leaving him paralysed.
The latest surgery is not being described as a new major health crisis. Sources familiar with the situation said it is a routine procedure addressing his longstanding back problems.
America’s Got Talent will continue without Cowell during his recovery. The current judging panel also includes Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara and Mel B, with Terry Crews serving as host. It has not yet been confirmed whether another celebrity judge will temporarily occupy Cowell’s seat.
Cowell previously missed television appearances while recovering from his 2020 accident. He suffered another electric-bike accident in 2022, this time breaking his arm.
Despite the headline suggesting the programme is “moving forward without” him, Cowell has not quit America’s Got Talent. His absence is expected to last only a few weeks while he undergoes surgery and recovers.
