A man has died and a woman has been left critically injured following a crash during a police pursuit near Stratford-upon-Avon.
Warwickshire Police said officers attempted to stop a black Audi on Birmingham Road shortly before 17:30 on Monday, but the driver failed to pull over.
The Audi then headed towards the A46 before travelling back towards Stratford along the A439 Warwick Road.
About 15 minutes after the attempted stop, the Audi collided with a white Ford Puma on Warwick Road.
Paramedics pronounced the male driver of the Audi dead at the scene.
The woman driving the Ford suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.
Police said several other vehicles were also damaged during the pursuit.
Because the fatal collision followed contact with police, Warwickshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The watchdog has subsequently launched an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash.
Superintendent Steve Flavell said specialist support was being provided to the families of those involved and confirmed that the force would cooperate fully with the watchdog’s investigation.
The A439 Warwick Road remains closed between the Marraway roundabout and the junction with Ingon Lane and Sand Barn Lane while investigators examine the scene. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.
The road had undergone safety improvements about two years earlier following concerns about collisions in the area. Measures included a one-way system, a lower speed limit, a protected turning lane at Ingon Lane and improved street lighting for pedestrians.
The IOPC investigation will examine the police pursuit and the events leading to the collision.
