Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, a day after blessing thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square.

Surrounded by Michelangelo’s renowned paintings, 137 cardinal electors will convene in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel for a College of Cardinals meeting. Their mission is to select the new leader of the Catholic Church.

An ongoing silent election campaign takes place within the Vatican City, particularly during times of a pope’s health challenges.

Pope Francis, who had been battling chronic lung disease, spent five weeks at Gemelli Hospital in February after being admitted for a respiratory crisis that progressed to double pneumonia.

In 2021, after undergoing colon surgery and spending 10 days in the hospital, he revealed that some individuals had expressed a desire for his demise and were actively preparing for the conclave.

Here are some of the leading contenders:

    Pietro Parolin (Italy, 70)

Currently serving as the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Parolin is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in international relations. His close association with Pope Francis and his role in key diplomatic missions position him as a strong candidate to continue the Church’s current trajectory. citeturn0search0

    Matteo Zuppi (Italy, 69)

Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Zuppi is known for his progressive stance and peace-building efforts, including mediating the end of Mozambique’s civil war. His alignment with Francis’s vision and his role as a special envoy in the Ukraine conflict highlight his commitment to global outreach. citeturn0search0

    Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines, 67)

Former Archbishop of Manila and current Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Cardinal Tagle embodies the Church’s growing focus on Asia. His pastoral approach and emphasis on humility resonate with many seeking continuity with Francis’s papacy.

    Péter Erdő (Hungary, 72)

As Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, Cardinal Erdő is respected for his theological acumen and conservative views. His leadership within the European Church and familiarity with African bishops make him a candidate who could bridge diverse perspectives. AP News

José Tolentino de Mendonça (Portugal, 59)

Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, Cardinal de Mendonça is a theologian and poet known for his intellectual contributions to the Church. His involvement in various Vatican congregations and cultural initiatives positions him as a thoughtful and modern choice. Sky News

The Spanish Archbishop of Rabat moved to Morocco in 2003 after a long stint of pastoral work in Latin America, particularly in Paraguay.

He is a member of the Salesians – a congregation of men in the Catholic church.

    Pierbattista Pizzaballa, 59

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem was made a cardinal by Pope Francis two years ago. He has devoted himself to the Middle East, facing several crises, including the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Last Christmas, he celebrated mass at the Holy Family Church in Gaza.

As the conclave approaches, the global Catholic community watches with anticipation. The next pope will not only inherit the spiritual leadership of over a billion faithful but also the challenges and opportunities of guiding the Church in a rapidly changing world.
