If you’re preparing for an ILR application as a refugee in the UK, this guide walks you through the exact steps. From eligibility to the final submission, we explain how to secure your Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) with ease.

ILR gives you the right to stay in the UK without time restrictions and opens the door to applying for British citizenship. In this guide, we walk you through the ILR process for refugees—from eligibility and documents to timeline and tips.

🧾 What is Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)?

ILR is a form of permanent residency that allows you to live, work, and study in the UK without time limits. It is often the final step before becoming a British citizen.

The ILR application as refugee UK process is unique because it begins only after refugee status is granted.

✅ Who Can Apply for ILR as a Refugee?

You can apply for ILR if:

    • You were granted refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK.

    • You have completed 5 years of continuous residence under that status.

    • You meet the good character requirement (no serious criminal convictions).

    • You have not breached UK immigration laws.

    • You meet the English language and Life in the UK Test requirements.

💡 Note: Time spent as an asylum seeker (before your claim was granted) or under a different visa, like a student visa, does not count toward the 5 years.

📝 Required Documents for ILR Application

When you’re ready to apply, make sure to gather:

    • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

    • Proof of 5 years of lawful residence (e.g., tenancy agreements, utility bills)

    • Refugee travel document or passport (if available)

    • Life in the UK Test certificate

    • Evidence of meeting the English language requirement

    • National Insurance number and evidence of employment (if applicable)

    • Any police registration certificate (if required)

💻 How to Apply for ILR as a Refugee

    1. Apply online using the UK Government’s Set Protection Route form (SET P).

    2. Upload supporting documents via UKVCAS or attend an in-person appointment.

    3. Provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo).

    4. Wait for a decision, which can take up to 6 months.

🕓 Priority and super priority services may not be available for ILR under protection routes.

🧠 Life in the UK Test

You must pass the Life in the UK Test unless you are:

    • Under 18 or over 65

    • Have a medical condition that prevents you from taking the test

Book your test online via the official government website.

    📅 When Can You Apply?

You should begin your ILR application as refugee UK at least 28 days before your 5-year period ends.  For example, if your refugee status was granted on 1st May 2023, you can apply from early April 2028.

    🏠 What Happens After ILR?

    Once you’re granted ILR:

    • You can live in the UK without immigration restrictions.

    • You can access public funds (benefits).

    • After one year, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship.

    • Apply for ILR (SET P Form) – GOV.UK

    • Life in the UK Test – Book Online

    📌 Final Tips

    • Start preparing your documents early.

    • Keep track of your residence history and absences from the UK.

    • Practice for the Life in the UK Test in advance.

    • Seek legal advice if your situation is complex.
