West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing allegations after an independent regulatory commission found the charges unproven, the club confirmed on Thursday, July 31.
The 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder had been accused by the Football Association (FA) of intentionally picking up yellow cards in Premier League matches to influence betting markets. Paqueta denied all four charges, and following a formal hearing, the commission ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to support the claims.
However, while the spot-fixing allegations were dismissed, the FA confirmed that Paqueta breached two rules by failing to fully cooperate with the investigation. A separate disciplinary commission will now decide on the appropriate sanctions for those offences.
In a statement released through the club, Paqueta said:
“I’ve always maintained my innocence against these very serious accusations. I’m relieved this part is behind me.”
West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady also responded, saying:
“We’re pleased Lucas has been cleared. He’s stood firm throughout, and the club has backed him completely.”
With the investigation largely resolved, Paqueta is now expected to shift his full attention back to football as the new Premier League season approaches.
