U.S. Changes Visa Policy for Nigerians: 3-Month, Single-Entry Visas Now in Effect

If you’re planning a trip to New York, applying to study in California, or heading to Atlanta for business, there’s a major update you need to know: the United States has implemented new visa rules for Nigerian citizens.

According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to holders of Nigerian passports will now be single-entry and valid for just three months. This marks a significant departure from the previous policy, which allowed multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years.

“Most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the embassy confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday.

Who Is Affected?

The change applies to all relevant U.S. visa applications submitted on or after July 8, 2025. However, previously issued visas remain valid for their full duration. If your visa was granted before this date, there is no change to your travel rights.

Why the Change?

The policy update is part of the U.S. government’s global visa reciprocity framework, which ensures that visa rules for foreign nationals reflect the treatment American citizens receive in those countries.

In short: if Nigerian authorities issue shorter or limited-entry visas to Americans, the U.S. may do the same in return.
