Two Women Drown in Suspected Mermaid Spirit Ritual in Zimbabwe

Two women have drowned in the Nyaure River near Bindura, Zimbabwe, during a ritual linked to the controversial spiritual practice known as manjuzu—a form of mermaid spirit worship that’s gaining popularity among some young women seeking wealth or fame.

The incident happened during a spiritual session led by a self-proclaimed prophet who claimed he was attempting to summon mermaid spirits said to dwell in sacred waters. Speaking to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the unnamed prophet confirmed that one of the victims was his wife.

“I went with some women to pray and to invoke the mermaid spirits. One of them was taken by the spirits, and when we tried to rescue her, another woman died. My wife also drowned during the rescue,” he told ZBC.

The deaths have sparked concern over unsanctioned rituals and the growing appeal of manjuzu practices, which often involve symbolic offerings and river-based ceremonies.

Traditional leaders have spoken out. Headman Masembura condemned the ritual and urged caution, warning against conducting such ceremonies without proper respect or spiritual oversight.

“These waters are sacred. There are underground spiritual beings there. You must follow the right procedures and consult local custodians of the area,” he said.

He also revealed that the prophet brought rice, biscuits, sweets, and wine as offerings apparently on behalf of a deceased colleague as part of the ritual.
