The US Supreme Court has denied Donald Trump‘s last effort to postpone his sentencing in the Stormy Daniels hush money case.
Trump was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to payments made to Daniels before the 2016 election. Prosecutors alleged that he paid her $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair in 2006, which Trump denies.
The Supreme Court decided that sentencing wouldn’t be a major issue during the presidential transition, as the judge has indicated Trump won’t face jail time, fines, or probation.
Trump’s attorneys argued that the evidence used violated a Supreme Court ruling granting him broad immunity from prosecution for acts as president.
They sought to delay sentencing to avoid distractions during the transition, but the court wasn’t persuaded. New York courts had previously refused to postpone sentencing, finding the convictions related to personal matters rather than official acts.
Trump’s team called the case politically motivated and plans to appeal again, but since the case is a state crime, Trump can’t pardon himself when he takes office.
