Trump claims Canada ‘considering’ offer of free Golden Dome in exchange for becoming 51st state

President Donald Trump asserted on Tuesday that Canada was contemplating relinquishing its statehood in exchange for protection provided by the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system at no cost. However, Canadian officials have consistently maintained that their country is not for sale.

Trump wrote on Truth Social, “I informed Canada, which is eager to join our magnificent Golden Dome System, that it would incur a $61 Billion investment if they remain an independent, albeit unequal, nation. Conversely, it would cost them nothing if they became our cherished 51st State.”

Trump claimed that Canada was seriously considering the offer.

In recent months, Trump has made threats to annex Canada, an idea that has been vehemently opposed by Canadian officials and their citizens.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, who secured an election victory last month partly due to Canadians’ opposition to Trump’s desire to make the country a part of the U.S., informed Trump earlier this month that his nation “will never be for sale.”

King Charles III, who is recognized as Canada’s sovereign, delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament on Tuesday, which appeared to reject Trump’s idea of purchasing the North American country and incorporating it into the 51st U.S. state.

He emphasized that Canadians possess the ability to provide themselves with far more than any foreign power on any continent can ever take away. By adhering to Canadian values, the country can establish new alliances and foster a new economy that benefits all Canadians.

Last week, Trump announced the selection of the architecture for the missile defense system, dubbed the “Golden Dome.” This system aims to create a network of satellites capable of detecting, tracking, and potentially intercepting incoming ballistic missiles.

The U.S. president revealed that the project will incur a cost of $175 billion and is expected to be fully operational within three years. Notably, Canada has expressed its desire to be a part of the system, and Trump has assured them that they will be included in its safety net.

During an earlier meeting, Trump acknowledged Canada’s interest in joining the project and stated that they would be discussing the matter further. He emphasized Canada’s desire for protection and expressed his willingness to consider their inclusion.

Last week, Carney’s office revealed that there were ongoing discussions between the U.S. and Canada regarding current and new security programs, including the “Golden Dome.”

A spokesperson for Carney stated to BBC News that Canadians have given the prime minister a strong mandate to negotiate a comprehensive new security and economic relationship with the United States.

The spokesperson further explained that the prime minister and his ministers are engaged in extensive and constructive discussions with their American counterparts. These discussions naturally encompass strengthening [North American Aerospace Defense Command] and related initiatives, such as the Golden Dome.
