A South African court on Thursday delivered a grim verdict, sentencing a woman to life in prison for the heinous crime of kidnapping and selling her six-year-old daughter. This horrific case shocked the nation and left the country in disbelief.
Joshlin Smith vanished from her home in Saldanha Bay, a fishing town located 135 kilometers north of Cape Town, in February last year. Despite an extensive nationwide search operation, her whereabouts remain unknown to this day.
Racquel “Kelly” Smith, Joshlin’s mother, was found guilty of kidnapping and selling the young girl. The prosecution alleged that Smith sold Joshlin for a staggering 20,000 rand ($1,100).
In a shocking turn of events, Judge Nathan Erasmus ruled that Smith, along with her two co-accused—a boyfriend and a mutual friend—be jailed for life for human trafficking. They were all sentenced to a concurrent 10 years imprisonment for kidnapping.
Erasmus further ordered the entry of Smith’s name into the child protection register, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
During the hour-long proceeding, Smith remained impassive as she sat in the courtroom. Initially, she was a figure of sympathy when her child disappeared, sparking a massive nationwide search operation. Photos of Joshlin’s striking green eyes, broad smile, and adorable brown pigtails flooded the internet, capturing the nation’s attention.
The case gained widespread attention, even reaching the ears of a minister who offered a substantial one-million-rand ($54,000) reward for Joshlin’s safe return.
However, the case took a dark turn when prosecutors revealed that Smith had sold her daughter to a traditional healer who was interested in Joshlin’s eyes and fair complexion.
South Africa, unfortunately, faces one of the highest crime rates in the world, and the kidnapping of children has become a pressing issue.
