DreamWorks Animation has pushed back the release of Shrek 5 for a second time. Originally slated for summer 2026, then moved to December 2026, the highly anticipated sequel will now hit cinemas in June 2027, according to Deadline.
No official reason has been given, but industry speculation points to the studio avoiding a crowded December 2026 release window alongside Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6.
Fans have voiced frustration over the delay, with one posting on X: “Another delay? At this point my kids will be showing Shrek 5 to their kids.”
The original Shrek (2001) became a global hit, grossing $487 million and spawning three sequels plus two Puss in Bootsspin-offs. The new film will reunite Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and introduce Fiona and Shrek’s teenage daughter Felicia, voiced by Zendaya.
A teaser trailer has already divided fans some praising the return to Far Far Away, others criticising the updated animation style, comparing it to the 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog backlash.
When it finally arrives, Shrek 5 will be the seventh film in the franchise.
