Netflix’s hit period drama Bridgerton will officially return for a fifth season in 2027, with the upcoming instalment focusing on the romance between Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling.
Filming is already well underway in the UK, having officially begun on March 24, 2026. Production is currently expected to wrap around October 19, although Netflix has yet to announce an exact premiere date. Industry estimates currently point towards a spring or summer 2027 release.
Season 5 will star Hannah Dodd as Francesca Bridgerton and Masali Baduza as Michaela Stirling, marking the first season of the Regency-era drama centred on a same-sex female couple. Netflix has confirmed the pair will lead the new chapter.
The story will pick up two years after the death of Francesca’s husband, John Stirling, whose death left her grieving during Season 4.
Francesca subsequently grew closer to John’s cousin Michaela, and the fifth season will explore their developing attraction as they navigate their feelings within Regency society.
Michaela is the television adaptation of Michael Stirling from Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked. The decision to gender-swap the character represents one of the show’s biggest departures from the original books.
Showrunner Jess Brownell has said Season 5 will emphasise “yearning” and “queer joy” rather than centring its storyline on trauma.
Several Bridgerton favourites returning
A large portion of the show’s established cast is expected back.
Alongside Dodd and Baduza, returning stars include Jonathan Bailey as Anthony, Simone Ashley as Kate, Luke Thompson as Benedict, Yerin Ha as Sophie, Claudia Jessie as Eloise, Ruth Gemmell as Violet, Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury and Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte.
Nicola Coughlan will also return as Penelope Bridgerton, although her role will be significantly reduced after several seasons at the centre of the story.
Three new characters have also been announced: Tega Alexander will play Christopher Anderson, Jacqueline Boatswain will portray Michaela’s mother Helen Stirling, and Gemma Knight Jones joins as Michaela’s friend Lady Elizabeth Ashworth.
What happens to Lady Whistledown?
One of the biggest mysteries following Season 4 concerns the future of Lady Whistledown.
After Penelope retired the famous pseudonym, the finale revealed that an unidentified person had apparently taken over the identity.
However, viewers should not expect an immediate answer.
Brownell has confirmed that the identity of the new Lady Whistledown will not be revealed during Season 5, allowing the mystery to continue into a future season.
Eloise Bridgerton’s future romance could also begin taking shape during the new episodes. Although Season 5 is devoted to Francesca, the series could start laying the groundwork for Eloise’s relationship with Sir Phillip Crane ahead of her expected turn in the spotlight.
Netflix has already renewed Bridgerton for Season 6.
When will Bridgerton Season 5 be released?
Netflix has so far confirmed only that Season 5 will arrive sometime in 2027.
With filming expected to finish around October 2026 and several months of editing, music recording and other post-production work required afterwards, current estimates suggest a spring or summer 2027 premiere is most likely. That remains an estimate rather than an official Netflix release window.
The season will consist of eight episodes, continuing the format used throughout the main series.
Production has been taking place at Shepperton Studios and several familiar locations, including Ranger’s House, the Old Royal Naval College, Hampton Court Palace and locations in Bath and central London.
Author and executive producer Julia Quinn recently visited the set and said she had read all the scripts, describing the upcoming season as “beautiful and spectacular.”
For fans facing another wait for the ton’s return, there is at least some encouraging news: if the current production schedule holds, the gap between Seasons 4 and 5 should be considerably shorter than the wait between some previous seasons.
