Seven African nations have officially qualified for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking one of the continent’s strongest performances in tournament history.
With the competition expanded to 48 teams for the first time, Africa has 10 representatives at the tournament, and seven have already secured places in the knockout stage.
The African teams through to the Round of 32 are:
- Morocco
- South Africa
- Côte d’Ivoire
- Egypt
- Cabo Verde
- Senegal
- Ghana
Two more nations, Algeria and DR Congo, remain in contention and could increase Africa’s representation if they win their final group-stage matches.
Morocco advance after convincing win
Morocco booked their place in the knockout rounds by finishing second in Group C after defeating Haiti 4-2 in their final group match.
The Atlas Lions will now face Group F winners, the Netherlands, in the Round of 32 on June 29.
South Africa make history
South Africa reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history.
After losing their opening match to co-host Mexico, Bafana Bafana recovered impressively by drawing with Czechia before defeating South Korea to finish second in Group A.
They will now take on Canada in the Round of 32 on June 28.
Côte d’Ivoire continue strong campaign
Côte d’Ivoire secured qualification after finishing second in Group E.
The Elephants recorded victories over Ecuador and Curaçao during the group stage and will face the runners-up from Group I in the next round on June 30.
Egypt through as Group G runners-up
Egypt booked their place in the knockout phase after earning a 1-1 draw against Iran in their final Group G fixture.
The Pharaohs are scheduled to face Australia in Dallas in the Round of 32.
Cabo Verde impress on World Cup debut
Tournament debutants Cabo Verde have become one of the surprise packages of the competition.
The Islanders finished unbeaten in Group H after earning draws against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
Their reward is a blockbuster Round of 32 clash against defending champions Argentina in Miami.
Senegal qualify as one of the best third-placed teams
Senegal progressed after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Iraq in their final Group I match.
The dominant win secured enough points and goal difference for the Lions of Teranga to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Ghana also secure knockout place
Ghana booked their place in the Round of 32 before completing their final Group L fixture.
Their four-point tally, combined with results elsewhere, guaranteed qualification regardless of the outcome of their last group match.
Algeria and DR Congo still have hope
Algeria remain in the race for qualification.
The North Africans are level on three points with Austria in Group J, with Sunday’s meeting between the two teams set to decide who progresses.
DR Congo also retain a mathematical chance of advancing.
They must defeat Uzbekistan in their final Group K match while hoping Portugal lose to Colombia in order to reach the knockout stage.

Several traditional football powers have also qualified for the Round of 32, including:

- Sweden
- Norway
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Ecuador
Tunisia eliminated
Tunisia are currently the only African nation eliminated from the tournament.
They join Haiti, Türkiye, Jordan, Panama, Qatar, Czechia and Curaçao as teams already knocked out of the competition.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 teams. Under the new tournament format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualify for the Round of 32, alongside the eight best third-placed teams, creating the largest knockout stage in World Cup history.
