Sean “Diddy” Combs could face renewed legal scrutiny over allegations linking him to the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, as claims involving the music mogul have been introduced as evidence in the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis.
Davis is accused of orchestrating the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur in Las Vegas. The rapper was shot on September 7, 1996 and died six days later at the age of 25.
A key piece of evidence presented by prosecutors is a secretly recorded conversation in which Davis allegedly claimed that Combs offered him $1 million to have Shakur killed.
Davis has since disputed the truthfulness of his own statements, arguing that he made sensational claims about the killing to increase his notoriety.
Combs has repeatedly denied involvement in Shakur’s death and previously described allegations connecting him to the killing as “pure fiction and completely ridiculous.”
Prosecutors allege Davis was travelling in a white Cadillac with members of the South Side Compton Crips on the night Shakur was shot. According to their case, the group was seeking retaliation after Davis’s nephew had been involved in an earlier confrontation connected to the rivalry surrounding Shakur.
Authorities allege Davis supplied or passed the firearm used by the shooter before shots were fired into the black BMW carrying Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight.
Davis was arrested in September 2023 and charged with murder. He has remained in custody while awaiting the outcome of the case.
The introduction of Davis’s claims about Combs into evidence does not establish that Combs commissioned Shakur’s murder, nor does it mean charges against Combs are inevitable. Prosecutors would need independent evidence capable of supporting criminal charges rather than relying solely on Davis’s disputed statements.
Combs is separately serving a federal prison sentence in New Jersey following his conviction on prostitution-related transportation offences. His current projected release date is February 20, 2028.
