Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, is currently lying in state in an open coffin at the Vatican, marking the beginning of a series of solemn rites leading up to his funeral. In accordance with his wishes for simplicity, his body was initially placed in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta, his residence during his papacy. Dressed in red liturgical vestments with the papal mitre and holding a rosary, the late pontiff’s body was displayed without the traditional elevated bier, reflecting his commitment to humility and modesty.

The Vatican has released images of Pope Francis in his open coffin, allowing the faithful to pay their respects. His body will be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica for public viewing, where he will lie in state until his funeral. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. local time in St. Peter’s Square.

In a departure from centuries of tradition, Pope Francis requested to be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, making him the first pope in over a century to be interred outside the Vatican. This decision aligns with his lifelong emphasis on humility and his deep devotion to the basilica.
Following the funeral, a nine-day mourning period known as “novendiales” will commence, during which Masses and prayers will be offered for the repose of his soul. Subsequently, the College of Cardinals will convene to elect the next pope, continuing the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church.
