Google Now Lets You Change Your Gmail Address Without Losing Data

Google has begun rolling out a long-requested feature that finally allows Gmail users to change their @gmail.com address while keeping all data, apps, and services intact.

The update first appeared on the Hindi version of Google’s support site, indicating the rollout may have begun in India or Hindi-speaking regions. The English help page still says Gmail addresses “usually cannot be changed,” but the Hindi page states the feature is gradually expanding to all users.

Under the new system, users can swap out their Gmail address for a new one without creating a new account. The original email address automatically becomes an alias, meaning messages sent to the old address will still arrive in the inbox. The old address will also remain valid for signing in to Google services such as YouTube, Maps, and Drive.

Until now, anyone wanting a cleaner Gmail address had to open a new account and manually migrate emails, files, and app connections — often breaking logins and third-party integrations.

Google says all existing data remains unchanged, including emails, photos, and account settings. Users will also be able to switch back to the old Gmail address later if they choose.

There are limits.

• Users who change their Gmail address cannot create another new Gmail address for 12 months.

• The new Gmail address cannot be deleted once created.

Full global rollout has not yet been confirmed, but the support documentation indicates it is coming.
