Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has severed ties with the Democratic Party. As per a press release released on Wednesday, Jean-Pierre is registering as an independent.

Jean-Pierre, who is 50 years old, served under two Democratic Presidents, Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the first openly lesbian and Black woman to hold the position of White House press secretary.

Following her departure from the federal government, Jean-Pierre has explained her decision in her upcoming book titled “Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines.”

“Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the President of the United States,” Jean-Pierre said in a statement released by the Hachette Book Group.

“At noon on that day, I became a private citizen who, like all Americans and many of our allies around the world, had to contend with what was to come next for our country,” she continued. “I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes. We need to be willing to exercise the ability to think creatively and plan strategically.”

In a video posted to Instagram, Jean-Pierre said she decided to “follow my own compass,” and she urged people to “stop thinking in boxes” and “not be so partisan.”

Jean-Pierre encouraged Americans to “embrace life as Independents.”

Jean-Pierre, a veteran Democratic Party flack who also worked for the 2020 Biden-Harris campaign and served as a spokeswoman for the far-left MoveOn advocacy group, said the book was about not always being in a “partisan stance.”

The description also says that the book, set to be released in October, will look at “the three weeks that led to Biden’s abandoning his bid for a second term and the betrayal by the Democratic Party that led to his decision.”
