Football fans planning to attend matches at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico have been warned that dozens of everyday items will be prohibited inside stadiums under a strict tournament-wide security policy.
FIFA has confirmed that any banned items discovered at entry checkpoints will be confiscated, while possession of certain restricted goods could result in removal from venues, arrest, fines, or even criminal prosecution depending on local laws.
The rules form part of a unified security framework designed to protect players, officials, and supporters throughout the tournament.
Among the items prohibited from stadiums are beach umbrellas, selfie sticks, folding chairs, inflatables, oversized bags, and a wide range of personal items that could disrupt matches or pose security risks.
Electronic smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vapes, are also banned inside all stadiums. Fans travelling to Mexico have been advised to exercise extra caution, as Mexican law places stricter restrictions on vaping products, with violations potentially carrying severe penalties.
FIFA has also imposed a zero-tolerance policy on pyrotechnics. Flares, smoke bombs, fireworks, and similar devices are strictly forbidden. Anyone caught attempting to bring such items into a venue could face immediate ejection, arrest, and criminal charges.
Bag policies have been tightened significantly. Spectators will only be allowed to carry transparent bags or very small personal clutches. Outside food and beverages are generally prohibited, although exceptions will be made for approved medical needs and infant supplies. Fans may bring one empty transparent plastic bottle that can be filled once inside the venue.
Traditional crowd noise-makers such as vuvuzelas, whistles, and air horns have also been banned, with supporters encouraged to create atmosphere through singing and chanting instead.
FIFA’s official code of conduct lists 33 categories of prohibited items, including:
• Weapons of any kind, including tasers, pepper spray, and self-defence devices
• Explosives, fireworks, flares, smoke bombs, and detonators
• Knives, improvised weapons, and heavy objects that could be used as weapons
• Toxic, hazardous, radioactive, or flammable materials
• Aerosols, thermoses, and pressurised containers
• Glass bottles, cans, and throwable objects
• Alcoholic beverages and liquids exceeding permitted limits
• Illegal drugs and controlled substances without valid prescriptions
• Vapes, e-cigarettes, tobacco products, and smoking devices
• Drones and remote-controlled aircraft
• Laser pointers
• Professional recording and broadcasting equipment
• Selfie sticks, tripods, and large camera accessories
• Oversized bags and luggage
• Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and personal transport devices
• Balloons, inflatables, frisbees, and sporting equipment
• Animals, except certified service animals
• Large musical instruments and excessive noise-making devices
• Face coverings intended to conceal identity, except for approved religious or medical reasons
Tournament organisers say the restrictions are intended to create a safe and enjoyable environment for millions of supporters expected to attend matches across North America.
Fans are being urged to review stadium regulations carefully before travelling to avoid delays, confiscations, or potential legal consequences on match day.
