Veteran British actor Anthony Head, best known for his role as Rupert Giles in the cult television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 72.

His daughters, actresses Emily Head and Daisy Head, confirmed that he passed away peacefully due to complications from pneumonia while surrounded by family.

In a heartfelt statement, they described their father as an extraordinary person whose impact extended far beyond the screen.

One of Head's best known roles was his portrayal of Rupert Giles in the teen show Buffy the Vampire Slayer between 1997 and 2003

“It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters,” they said. “We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues and fans. He loved his work very much and always considered himself incredibly fortunate to have spent decades working alongside talented people in wonderful productions.”

The actor’s death comes just months after the passing of his long-time partner, Sarah Fisher, who died in December 2025 at the age of 61. Their daughters previously described her death as sudden and devastating, saying it left a “crater” in their lives.

Anthony Head enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades and became a household name through his portrayal of Giles, the wise mentor and Watcher to Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The role earned him a devoted global fan base and remains one of the most beloved characters in television history.

Beyond Buffy, Head appeared in numerous successful television shows and films. He played King Uther Pendragon in the BBC fantasy series Merlin and appeared in the comedy series Little Britain.

His film credits included roles in The Iron Lady and The Inbetweeners Movie. More recently, he gained acclaim for portraying Rupert Mannion in the award-winning Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.

Born in Camden, London, Head came from a family deeply connected to the arts. His father was a documentary filmmaker, his mother was an actress, and his brother, Murray Head, also enjoyed a successful entertainment career.

Reflecting on his childhood in a 2016 interview, Head recalled his love of dressing up and performing from a young age, crediting his creative upbringing for nurturing his passion for acting.

Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow actors, colleagues and fans around the world, many celebrating a career that brought memorable characters to life across generations.

While Anthony Head is gone, his legacy lives on through the countless productions that made him one of Britain’s most respected and recognisable actors.
