Former US President Barack Obama, 63, joined his wife Michelle Obama on her IMO podcast, appearing alongside her older brother Craig Robinson. The episode drops Wednesday, July 16.
In a preview released ahead of the premiere, Barack and Michelle open up about parenting their daughters, Sasha, 24, and Malia, 27.
“I think we did a pretty good job raising our girls, but I’ve said often that I probably would’ve struggled more with a son,” Barack said. Michelle agreed: “I do too.”
Barack went on: “I think I might’ve been more judgmental, harder. I’d like to think I would’ve caught myself, but father-son relationships—especially without having a dad of my own to model it—might’ve been tougher.”
He’s spoken before about the limited role his own father played in his life. Born in Hawaii, Barack was raised by his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, after his parents divorced when he was just two.
This isn’t the first time the Obamas have addressed the idea of having a son. Just last month, in another IMO episode, Michelle admitted she was “so glad” they didn’t have a boy.
