At least 21 people were killed and dozens injured after two trains collided in southern Spain on Sunday night, according to authorities.
A train travelling from Málaga to Madrid derailed near Adamuz and crossed onto the adjacent track, where it struck an oncoming Madrid-to-Huelva train. Both trains derailed, Spain’s rail infrastructure operator Adif said.
The crash occurred about 10 minutes after the Iryo-operated train departed Málaga at 6:40pm local time. Emergency services said they received multiple calls reporting injured and trapped passengers.
Spanish state media reported around 100 people were injured, including at least 25 seriously. Witnesses said one carriage completely overturned, while others described the impact as feeling like an earthquake.
Passengers used emergency hammers to break windows and escape darkened carriages after the lights went out. Video footage showed Iryo staff instructing passengers to remain seated while first aid was administered and evacuation plans were prepared.
An estimated 400 people were on board the two trains combined. Medical teams and fire services were deployed to the scene, and hospitals were placed on standby.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was closely monitoring the situation. Rail services between Madrid and Andalucía have been suspended as investigations continue.
