Donald Trump is seeking $1 billion contributions from countries that want permanent membership on a new US-backed Board of Peace, according to reports citing a draft charter seen by Reuters.
The Board of Peace, unveiled by the White House on Friday, is set to oversee Gaza’s transitional administration as part of Trump’s peace plan for the territory. Trump will chair the body, which includes an 11-member executive board alongside additional members.
The US has reportedly contacted around 60 countries, offering extended board membership beyond three years in exchange for a $1bn contribution. The proposal was first reported by Bloomberg News.
Israel said it was not consulted on the creation of the board. In a statement, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Foreign Minister Gideon Saar would raise concerns with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, particularly over the inclusion of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the executive board, a role Israel opposes.
Other founding executive board members include Rubio, Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, former UK prime minister Tony Blair, UN officials Sigrid Kaag and Nickolay Mladenov, US deputy national security adviser Robert Gabriel, billionaire Marc Rowan, and World Bank president Ajay Banga.
Jordan, Egypt and Turkey have confirmed receiving invitations, while leaders from France, Germany, Australia and Canada were also reportedly invited. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was asked to represent the EU.
The White House said Major General Jasper Jeffers will lead an International Stabilisation Force responsible for security, demilitarisation and humanitarian aid delivery in Gaza.
Trump described the board as “the Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled” and said it could later expand its mandate to address other global conflicts.
The initiative enters its second phase amid a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, which has continued to see sporadic violence following the two-year conflict that began after the Hamas-led October 2023 attack on Israel.
