Primark Chief Executive Paul Marchant has resigned following an allegation regarding his behavior toward a woman in a social setting.

Associated British Foods (ABF), Primark’s parent company, stated that an external legal investigation was conducted. The inquiry concluded that Mr. Marchant “acknowledged his error in judgment and accepted that his actions fell below the standards expected” by the company.

ABF confirmed that Mr. Marchant fully cooperated with the investigation and issued an apology to the individual involved.

George Weston, ABF’s Chief Executive, expressed his disappointment, emphasizing the company’s commitment to respect and integrity. “Colleagues and others must be treated with respect and dignity. Our culture has to be, and is, bigger than any one individual,” he said.

He further stated, “At ABF, we believe that high standards of integrity are essential. Acting responsibly is the only way to build and manage a business over the long term.”

ABF reassured that it remains in contact with the individual who raised the concerns and has offered its support.

Following the announcement, ABF’s share price declined by nearly 4%, closing at £18.64 per share.

Mr. Marchant had been at the helm of Primark since 2009, succeeding the company’s founder, Arthur Ryan. Before joining Primark, he held leadership roles at several major retailers, including Debenhams, Topman, River Island, and New Look.

Under his leadership, Primark significantly expanded its international footprint, growing its presence across Europe and the United States, with further expansion plans in place.

Primark remains a crucial division within ABF, accounting for nearly half of the company’s total revenue, which stands at £20 billion. However, in its latest trading update for the Christmas period, the retailer reported declining sales in the UK and Ireland, which contribute 45% of its total revenue.

Susannah Streeter, Head of Money and Markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, noted that Mr. Marchant’s departure comes at a challenging time for Primark.

“The leadership change will be unsettling, particularly given that Primark’s recent results have been mixed,” she said. “This disruption comes amid weaker consumer sentiment, leading to reduced foot traffic and a loss of market share in the UK.”

While international markets have performed well, she cautioned that the leadership transition could impact the pace of Primark’s global expansion.

In the wake of Mr. Marchant’s immediate departure, ABF’s Finance Director, Eoin Tonge, has been appointed interim Chief Executive of Primark. Joana Edwards, the company’s Financial Controller, will take over Mr. Tonge’s responsibilities.

ABF stated, “Both executives have the experience to perform these roles well.”
