President Biden releases farewell letter, says it’s been ‘privilege of my life to serve this nation’

President Biden released a farewell letter on Wednesday, expressing that “It has been the privilege of my life to serve this nation for over 50 years.” He highlighted the strength of the current economy, stating, “Today, we have the strongest economy in the world and have created a record 16.6 million new jobs. Wages are up. Inflation continues to come down.” This message comes ahead of a speech he is set to deliver from the Oval Office later that evening.AP/Susan Walsh

In his letter, Biden reflected on the challenges faced when he took office four years ago. He noted that the country was grappling with “the worst pandemic in a century, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.” Despite these obstacles, he emphasized the resilience of the American people, stating, “But we came together as Americans, and we braved through it. We emerged stronger, more prosperous, and more secure.”

Biden took pride in the economic growth achieved during his presidency, asserting, “We’re rebuilding our entire nation — urban, suburban, rural, and Tribal communities.” He pointed out the resurgence of manufacturing in America and the country’s leadership in science and innovation, particularly in the semiconductor industry. Additionally, he celebrated the success in reducing prescription drug costs for seniors, claiming, “More people have health insurance today in America than ever before.”

He also shared his motivation for running for president, explaining, “I ran for president because I believed that the soul of America was at stake. The very nature of who we are was at stake. And, that’s still the case.” He encapsulated his belief in the American ideal, stating, “America is an idea stronger than any army and larger than any ocean.”

As he prepares to leave office next week, Biden will hand over the reins to President-elect Donald Trump, who is returning for a second term. In his farewell, Biden reflected on his journey, writing, “Nowhere else on Earth could a kid with a stutter from modest beginnings in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware, one day sit behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office as President of the United States.” His letter serves as a poignant reminder of the progress made and the enduring spirit of the nation.
