A Nigerian photographer, Adeleke, has shared a disturbing incident he witnessed during a wedding photoshoot, where a groom allegedly slapped his bride simply because she requested more photos.
Adeleke revealed the incident on Monday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), while responding to a thread discussing how makeup artists often conceal signs of domestic violence on brides’ faces ahead of their wedding ceremonies.
“Can’t believe I witnessed this just last month,” he wrote. “The groom literally slapped the bride during their personal shoot at the hotel, just because she asked him to wait a bit for more shots. I just faced my camera like I was adjusting something on it. It was a family issue.”
His revelation has sparked concern online, as many users expressed outrage over the normalization and concealment of abuse, even on what is supposed to be the happiest day of a couple’s life. Some also called for more awareness and intervention in such situations, especially among wedding vendors and professionals who are often silent witnesses.
The disturbing incident adds to growing conversations in Nigeria about domestic violence and how it can be masked or overlooked during traditional and white wedding ceremonies.
