R&B singer Brian McKnight will no longer perform at Claflin University’s 31st Presidential Scholarship Gala in Orangeburg, South Carolina, after backlash from students and board members prompted the school to cancel his appearance.

The 56-year-old artist was set to headline the annual fundraising event, but the university announced the cancellation in a statement shared on social media.

Claflin University President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack wrote:

“Claflin University values and respects the perspectives of our constituents and stakeholders. We take your concerns regarding the artist for the Scholarship Gala seriously and are currently exploring options. Thank you for your loyal and continued support as we work to ensure this event is a beacon of light for our institution while raising needed funds to support student scholarships.”

McKnight, whose career spans more than three decades, is best known for hits like “One Last Cry,” “Anytime,” and “Back at One.” His 1992 self-titled debut album went platinum and launched him into R&B stardom.

Despite 16 Grammy nominations — the most for any male R&B artist without a win except Snoop Dogg — McKnight has faced growing public criticism in recent years over personal controversies, which many students cited in their opposition to his performance.

The university has not yet announced a replacement performer for the gala.
