US singer and rapper Chris Brown has been granted bail by a London judge after being charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) in connection with an alleged assault at a London nightclub in 2023.

The 36-year-old artist, known for chart-topping hits like Loyal, Run It, and Under the Influence, was released on bail following a hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday. Though he was not present in person, Judge Tony Baumgartner approved bail on the condition that Brown pays a £5 million security bond.

Chris Brown had initially been remanded in custody following the London assault after appearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday. He was arrested the day before at a Manchester hotel by detectives from the Metropolitan Police, shortly after arriving in the UK via private jet for the European leg of his tour.

The charges stem from an alleged violent altercation at Tape, a high-profile nightclub in London, where Brown is accused of attacking music producer Abraham Diaw in an incident described by prosecutors as “an unprovoked assault.” It is claimed that Brown used a bottle as a weapon to strike Diaw multiple times before following him to another area of the venue, where he allegedly continued the assault by punching and kicking him repeatedly.

Brown is facing one count of GBH and is set to appear again in court on 20 June.

    Strict Bail Conditions

As part of his bail conditions, Brown must not use his passport for any reason other than his international tour, which includes scheduled performances in the UK during June and July. He is also required to provide the court with a permanent UK address at which he will reside during his time in the country.

The judge imposed several additional restrictions: Brown is prohibited from contacting the alleged victim, Mr. Diaw, from visiting the nightclub Tape, and from applying for any new international travel documents while the case is ongoing.

    Co-Defendant Also Charged

Brown is not the only US artist facing charges over the incident. Fellow American rapper Omololu Akinlolu, better known by his stage name HoodyBaby, has also been charged with grievous bodily harm in relation to the same event.

Akinlolu, 38, is expected to appear alongside Brown at Southwark Crown Court on 20 June. A separate case management hearing for both men has been scheduled for 24 October.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the high-profile case is expected to draw significant media attention, particularly as it coincides with Brown’s ongoing world tour.
