Chelsea Remove Enzo Fernández Social Media Post After Fan Backlash Following England’s World Cup Exit

Chelsea have deleted a social media post celebrating midfielder Enzo Fernández after it drew criticism from supporters following England’s defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.

The Premier League club had shared a post acknowledging Fernández’s performance while representing Argentina. However, the message was later removed after many fans argued that its timing was inappropriate in the immediate aftermath of England’s 2-1 loss.

The match itself was already surrounded by heightened emotions, with tensions increasing after reports that several Argentina players celebrated with a banner reaffirming their country’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

Chelsea have not issued a public explanation for removing the post.

Fernández played a significant role in Argentina’s comeback victory, scoring the equaliser before Lautaro Martínez netted a stoppage-time winner to send the defending champions into the World Cup final.

The Argentine midfielder remains one of Chelsea’s key players and is expected to feature when his country takes on Spain in Sunday’s final.

The deleted post prompted widespread discussion across social media. Some supporters argued that clubs should exercise greater sensitivity when celebrating players whose national teams have just eliminated England from a major tournament, particularly given the emotional reaction among English fans.

Others defended Chelsea’s original post, saying it was appropriate for the club to acknowledge one of its own players while he was representing his country on the international stage, regardless of the opponent.

The incident has added to the online debate over how clubs should balance support for their international players with the sentiments of their domestic fan base during major international competitions.
