Elon Musk to step back from government role ‘in coming months’

A senior White House official revealed to NBC News that Donald Trump discussed Elon Musk’s potential return to the private sector during a cabinet meeting in March.

Donald Trump informed members of his cabinet that Elon Musk will relinquish his government position in the coming months.

According to a senior White House official, as reported by NBC News, Sky’s US partner network, President Trump discussed the possibility of Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk returning to the private sector during a cabinet meeting last month.

During the meeting held on March 24, Mr. Trump reportedly addressed Mr. Musk, calling him a “patriot.” He further emphasized that Mr. Musk had never sought any favors from him.

On Monday, in the Oval Office, President Trump stated that Mr. Musk would eventually return to his business ventures.

The official announced that Mr. Musk would resign from his position as a special government employee at the end of his 130-day tenure.

The official stated that the resignation would take effect on May 30th, but it remains uncertain whether the billionaire businessman will actually leave on that date.

The White House previously announced that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a temporary organization, would be terminated on July 4th next year, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Days after Mr. Musk revealed that some members of his DOGE team were receiving death threats on a daily basis, he faced criticism for his efforts to reduce the size of the US federal government.

In just a few weeks, entire agencies were dismantled, leading to the firing or resignation of tens of thousands of workers from the 2.3 million-strong federal workforce.

As a result, numerous lawsuits were filed in state and federal courts in response to the cuts recommended by DOGE.
