Global music superstar Shakira has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of her highly publicized breakup with former football star Gerard Piqué, describing it as one of the most challenging periods of her life.
In a recent interview, the Colombian singer reflected on the personal growth that followed the end of their 11-year relationship in 2022, which was overshadowed by allegations of infidelity involving Piqué.
“I always thought that I was more fragile or weaker than what life proved me to be,” Shakira said, explaining how the experience revealed a strength she never knew she possessed.
The heartbreak later inspired her record-breaking hit song Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53, which became her first Top 10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in more than a decade. The singer described writing the song as a form of emotional release and healing.
“It was just pure catharsis. I really needed to write about what I was going through and not have any censor,” she explained, adding that songwriting can feel like therapy.

Shakira also credited her close friends and family for helping her navigate the difficult chapter, saying that support from loved ones reminded her of the importance of gratitude, even for painful experiences.
“Even for the people that leave you with scars,” she said, “because they just make us better.”
The singer, who shares two sons, Milan and Sasha, with Piqué, said motherhood became her greatest source of strength following the breakup. Despite dealing with personal heartbreak, she focused on maintaining stability for her children and continuing with everyday responsibilities.
“When your world collapses, you have to get up and pay the bills and still prepare breakfast and take your kids to school. Life needs to go on,” she said.
Shakira explained that becoming a mother changed her outlook on life completely and continues to teach her valuable lessons every day.
Since separating from Piqué, Shakira and her sons have relocated from Spain to Miami, where she has focused on family and rebuilding her life. Although she has been linked to several high-profile figures in recent years, including basketball player Jimmy Butler and Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, the singer says romance is not currently a priority.
For now, Shakira says her focus remains firmly on raising her children and embracing the next chapter of her life.
