British Actor John Alford Dies in Prison at 54

John Alford, a British actor convicted last year of sex offenses involving two teenage girls, has died while serving his prison sentence. Authorities confirmed he died on March 13, 2026.

According to reports from the BBC and The Mirror, a spokesperson for the prison service confirmed the death, stating that “John Shannon died in prison on 13 March 2026.” As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will carry out an investigation.

Shannon was Alford’s legal surname, though he was widely known by his professional name throughout his acting career.

Alford became well known in the 1980s and 1990s through roles in the British television series Grange Hill and London’s Burning. His career later declined following a series of legal issues, including a conviction for supplying drugs to an undercover reporter, which led to his dismissal from London’s Burning.

In 2024, Alford was charged with sex offenses involving two teenage girls. Prosecutors accused him of assaulting a 15-year-old and a 14-year-old in 2022. During the trial, the 14-year-old testified that Alford raped her in two separate locations inside a house after they had been drinking vodka together.

Alford consistently denied the allegations before and after his conviction in September 2025. In January 2026, a judge sentenced him to eight years and six months in prison.

He was 54 years old.
