Gayle King’s position at CBS Mornings is reportedly under review, with network sources claiming CBS is exploring possible replacements as her $15 million annual contract approaches its May 2026 expiration.
One name now being floated is Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. CBS News recently announced “A Townhall with Erika Kirk,” moderated by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. The event will focus on the murder of her husband, political violence in the US, the future of conservatism, and her Christian faith.
Erika Kirk, 37, gained national attention after Charlie Kirk was shot and killed by a sniper on September 10 in Orem, Utah. She is a mother of two and was later appointed chairwoman and CEO of Turning Point USA, the conservative organisation her husband co-founded. She previously competed in the Miss Arizona USA and Miss USA pageants in 2012 and now runs the nonprofits Everyday Heroes Like You and BIBLEin365.
According to RadarOnline, CBS is unlikely to renew Gayle King’s contract due to cost concerns and declining ratings. Another source claimed Weiss is also considering former Today Show co-host Hoda Kotb as a potential replacement.
“People with big salaries and small ratings are going to be mercilessly cut, and Gayle fits the bill,” a source said. “Bari wants a major name who brings credibility, warmth, and viewers.”
Reports that Erika Kirk could replace King have sparked backlash online. Critics argue CBS should appoint another person of color rather than a wealthy conservative figure. Others accused Kirk of political opportunism, while some viewers claimed the move would damage the network’s credibility.
CBS has not publicly confirmed any casting decisions or commented on Gayle King’s contract status.
