Fricker was widely celebrated for her acclaimed performance in My Left Foot, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and for portraying the beloved Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

Paying tribute, her agent, Phil Belfield, described Fricker as a unique talent whose impact on film and television would never be forgotten.

Born in Dublin in 1945 to Bina and Desmond Fricker, she initially worked as an assistant to the art editor of The Irish Times before discovering a passion for acting. Her screen career began with a small, uncredited appearance in the 1964 film Of Human Bondage.

Fricker went on to build a distinguished career in British and Irish television, appearing in Ireland’s first soap opera Tolka Row before joining the cast of Coronation Street as a staff nurse. She later became a familiar face to television audiences through her role as Megan Roach in the BBC medical drama Casualty, where she appeared in 65 episodes.

International recognition arrived with My Left Foot (1989), in which she portrayed the mother of Irish writer and artist Christy Brown, played by Daniel Day-Lewis. Her performance won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and also earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

She reunited with director Jim Sheridan for The Field, starring alongside Richard Harris. Fricker later appeared in a string of Hollywood productions, including So I Married an Axe Murderer, A Time to Kill, and numerous television dramas.

One of her most enduring performances came in 1992 when she starred opposite Macaulay Culkin as the compassionate Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, a role that has remained a favourite with audiences around the world.

After a six-year break from acting, Fricker returned to the screen in 2021 with the television drama Holding. Her final screen appearance came in 2024 in The Swallow, directed by filmmaker Tadhg O’Sullivan.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Brenda Fricker established herself as one of Ireland’s most accomplished actors, earning critical acclaim for performances across film, television and theatre. Her Oscar-winning work in My Left Foot and her memorable role in Home Alone 2 ensured her place among the most respected performers of her generation.
