Tom Ford denies sending out a tweet that referred to First Lady Melania Trump as a “glorified escort” on Monday. The tweet, which was shared on an anonymous account, began with the words: “Who likes Tom Ford?”
The tweet continued: “Tom Ford refuses to dress Melania Trump: “I have no interest in dressing a glorified escort who steals speeches and has bad tasted in men.”
But Ford eventually denied ever saying those words.
“This is an absolutely fabricated and completely fake quote that somehow went viral,” a spokeswoman for Ford tweeted Tuesday afternoon. “Mr. Ford did not make this statement; it is completely false.”
The account that originally shared the tweet removed the post and apologized after garnering more than 16,000 followers.
“She’s not necessarily my image,” Ford said of Melania during an appearance on The View in 2016. He went on to explain that he likely would not have dressed Hillary Clinton either, even though he voted for her and he was very sad that she lost the election.
Ford explained that his clothes are “too expensive” for the everyday woman. Prices for his gowns can run anywhere from $2,000 to more than $58,000.
When a ’View’ co-host mentioned that he once dressed former First Lady Michelle Obama, Ford said, “I thought it was appropriate” for the event at the time.
Ford further elaborated on why he wouldn’t dress Mrs. Trump.
“Given this President’s beliefs about ‘made in America’ – I think the clothes they wear should be made in America,” he said. “I think that whoever is the President, or the First Lady, should be wearing clothes at a price point that are accessible to most Americans, and wearing clothes made in America. My clothes are made in Italy, they’re very, very expensive. I don’t think most women or men in our country can relate to that, and I think the First Lady or the President should represent all people.”
