Furious PM ‘to sack Raab’ in reshuffle over his handling of Afghan crisis

BORIS Johnson is furious with Dominic Raab’s bungling of the Afghanistan crisis and will sack him in a reshuffle, allies of the PM said last night.

A memo reveals Foreign Office staff urged him to speak to Afghan counterpart Hanif Atmar to evacuate British interpreters last Friday as the Taliban advanced on Kabul.

But Mr Raab, who was sunning himself in Crete, palmed it off on his junior Lord Goldsmith instead — leading to delays in the crunch call.

The PM and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace are said to be raging over the blunder.

Seething Tory MPs privately called for him to be sacked.

A senior Whitehall source said: “The PM is livid at Raab and can’t believe he didn’t take the call — and the Defence Secretary is apoplectic.”

A Tory MP told The Sun: “We need a Foreign Secretary who is out there batting for Britain, not dozing on a sun lounger when the chips are down.”
A key ally of the PM said of Mr Raab: “He will not be Foreign Secretary after the reshuffle.”

Boris is thought to be eyeing up moving Mr Raab to the Cabinet Office and giving Michael Gove another job.

In a sign of how much Mr Raab’s position has crumbled, Foreign Office staff are openly mocking their boss.

One told The Sun he had “a second-rate brain”.

But a spokeswoman for the PM said he had “full confidence” in Mr Raab.

And Mr Wallace publicly said a phone call last Friday as “the Afghan government was melting away quicker than ice” would have made no difference.
